What is the difference between Hyaluronic acid and Sodium Hyaluronate?

December 14, 2023
It is not difficult to find in daily life that some manufacturers produce some daily chemical products with a component sometimes called hyaluronic acid, sometimes called sodium hyaluronate. So, are hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate the same substance? Except for some differences, these two ingredients are basically the same and have similar effects in skincare. So next, we will share with you the differences between the two.
Hyaluronic acid is an acidic mucopolysaccharide, which was first isolated from bovine vitreous by ophthalmologists Meyer and others at Columbia University in 1934. Hyaluronic acid exhibits various important physiological functions in the body due to its unique molecular structure and physicochemical properties, such as lubricating joints, regulating vascular wall permeability, regulating protein, water electrolyte diffusion and operation, and promoting wound healing. Of particular importance, hyaluronic acid has a special moisturizing effect and is currently the best moisturizing substance found in nature, known as an ideal natural moisturizing factor. Biochemical drugs with high clinical value are widely used in various ophthalmic surgeries, such as lens implantation, corneal transplantation, and anti glaucoma surgery. It can also be used to treat arthritis and accelerate wound healing. When used in cosmetics, it can have a unique protective effect on the skin, keeping it moist, smooth, delicate, and elastic. It has the functions of wrinkle prevention, anti wrinkle, beauty and health care, and restoring skin physiological functions.
Sodium hyaluronate is a substance extracted from chicken crowns and can also be fermented by lactic acid bacteria. It is a white or almost white particle or powder with no odor and is widely used in the cosmetics industry, with moisturizing effects. Widely used in the high-end cosmetics industry for dry eye syndrome. Like hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate can weigh up to 1000 times its own weight in water, but this form can penetrate deep into the skin and is more stable in beauty product formulations (meaning it can last longer). The appearance of sodium hyaluronate can be understood as fibrous or paste powder, which often appears in moisturizing agents and essence products. As a moisturizer, sodium hyaluronate's function is to inhale water from the environment and lower layers of the skin into the epidermis. It is a common absorbent component. Sodium hyaluronate can serve as a reservoir for the skin, helping it regulate its moisture content.
Both are mainly used in the cosmetics industry for their moisturizing functions, with the specific difference being that hyaluronic acid is an acid and sodium hyaluronate is a salt. Sodium content is more stable, and adding sodium will turn it into a non Newtonian fluid, which is very good for exfoliating.
